Demon Study: Agares

AgeusAgares, my old friend, it is time that I write about thee.I have a very strong relationship with this spirit and he has helped me out in a number of projects dealing with languages and writing.True to the old Lore,he has always appeared to me as a kindly old man on the back of a crocodile, sometime with a hawk, but at others with a snake in his hand.It is said by some praticinerions that he can appear as a woman, but that has never been the case in my experience. The Lore states:

Pseudomonarchia daemonum – Johann Wier (1583)

Agares – The first duke under the power of the east, is named Agares, he commeth up mildile [i.e. he appears willingly] in the likenes of a faire old man, riding upon a crocodile, and carrieng a hawke on his fist; hee teacheth presentlie all maner of toongs, he fetcheth backe all such as runne awaie, and maketh them runne that stand still; he overthroweth all dignities supernaturall and temporall, hee maketh earthquakes, [lit. “and makes spirits of the earth dance”] and is of the order of vertues, having under his regiment thirtie one legions.

Dictionnaire Infernal – Collin de Plancy (1863) (paraphrased)
Aguares, of the order of the virtues who governs thirty-one legions, appears riding a crocodile and carrying a sparrowhawk. He is said to make deserters return and can cause enemies to flee. He can exalt people, teach all languages, and make the earth spirits dance.

Goetia – S. L. MacGregor Mathers (1904)

The Second Spirit is a Duke called Agreas, or Agares. He is under the Power of the East, and cometh up in the form of an old fair Man, riding upon a Crocodile, carrying a Goshawk upon his fist, and yet mild in appearance. He maketh them to run that stand still, and bringeth back runaways. He teaches all Languages or Tongues presently. He hath power also to destroy Dignities both Spiritual and Temporal, and causeth Earthquakes. He was of the Order of Virtues. He hath under his government 31 Legions of Spirits. And this is his Seal or Character which thou shalt wear as a Lamen before thee.

I’ve asked for help and advice on Sanskrit, Hebrew, Spanish, Enochian, and with my work on the demonolator enns (Enns are sentences of invitation, admiration or requests for protection for particular demons, the language comes from the private grimoires of demonolator Alexander Willit in 16th century.). If called often, he will remind you to work harder on the languages he helps you with, and can get quite cross if you “give up” on one and try to move on to something much more challenging, as I did working from Spanish to Sanskrit.I have a small command of each tongue, but would have had a much greater grasp of word meaning and syntax if I hadn’t jumped from one to the other in such a way. He comes quickly and is easy to work with, at times the kind but disapproving school teacher, this spirit wants you to do the work to gain what you are after. At one time when I was working with Enochian heavaly, he sat down and drew a sigil on a piece of parchment. Agares told me that if I draw this sigil on the top of the page I was using to study with, it would increase comprehension dramatically. Needless to say, I still use this sigil and it still serves me well in this capacity. In conversations I’ve had with him it was relayed to me that he is as old as the moon and was on the ground when the pyramids were being built.Hinted that he was a contemporary of Horus.  I’ve been given the name of the crocodile spirit that he rides, but am not at liberty to reveal that name (I will ask him if I can publish the name at a later date). I have bought Cups of Coffee and books on Language in his honor and have left them open on tables in schools for services rendered. His Enn: Rean Ganen Ayar Da Agares

  1. Hi there. This was an interesting post. I have experience working with Agares and would respectfully mention the following. The crocodile motif is actually borrowed from Hindu mythology. Mother Ganga is traditionally seen riding a crocodile. At no time has Agares appeared as an old man or riding a crocodile to me.

My experience with Agares has been in keeping with many witches who work with Her when She appears in feminine form. In the latter Her appearance is blonde and resembling a Swedish woman or a Bayerische lass. Agares presented an LP a few autumn’s ago called Som Jag Ar by Agnetha Faltskog. The name on the LP is an acronym and the mystical appearance on the LP cover is approximately what Agares looks like.

I received the same approximate information regarding Khemet and the appearance in the Hermetica in which Agares granted certain demigods legion over Upper Egypt. I received additional guidance that Agares is in fact the Agathos demon featured in the latter as well as the PGM.

The ritual correspondences I have been able to derive are as follows: color preference, Orange. Odors, patchouli honey cocoa and coffee. Stones, orange jade. Offertory, Beer preferably Hefeweizen with Orange slices. Pacts solemnization, as you mention above, matters of heart, languages, international communication matters, and wealth creation. Ruling house, Focolor or Lucifuge Rofocale. She can be reached in meditation through the latter.

    Kind regards.
